Nothing kills the vibe faster than discovering your Hinge date is a die-hard supporter of your rival club, especially after everything was going perfectly! So single ladies, here’s an easy way to separate the keepers from the passers: invite them to a WSL match. However you identify, whoever you’re dating women’s football is an underrated date spot for many reasons.

It’s fun, it’s social, and honestly, you’ll never run out of things to talk about, unlike a dinner date where the conversation can flatline after two minutes. You’re surrounded by energy, chants and fans who are just as invested as you are, so there’s never an awkward silence. It’s affordable too: a pint and a pie beats a three-course meal and the adrenaline of the game makes even the simplest moment feel exciting.

And here’s the best part, if you’re dating a man and they can’t handle a women’s football match, that’s a pretty solid red flag they might not respect women’s spaces… or you. Consider it a built-in vetting system: who’s willing to cheer for your team, survive the banter and maybe even join in the chants? Those are the ones worth keeping.

And it’s not just about finding someone who can survive the chants, football has turned into a vibrant hub for queer connection too. The WSL isn’t just gay-friendly, it’s practically the sapphic social event of the season. From loud and proud queer players to fan-clubs like the Gay Gooners it’s undeniable that the WSL has become one of the safest sporting environments for the WLW community.

There’s something magical about seeing players who look and love like you out on the pitch, it makes the whole space feel safer, warmer and a little more electric. It’s the kind of atmosphere where you can hold hands in the stands without thinking twice or even steal a celebratory first kiss after your favourite striker smashes one into the top bins.

Not a fan of the apps? Not to worry! The post-match pub is the new meet-cute. If there’s one thing I’ve noticed while downing a beer after a game, it’s that WSL fans love to chat. Whether you’re making new friends or meeting potential dates, everyone’s keen to talk football. The best part about a post-match pint is that you’ve already got the perfect conversation starter: the game itself. You can debrief over missed chances, debate who should have been Player of the Match or bond over the heartbreak of conceding in the 90th minute.

It’s instant chemistry without any of the small-talk stress. And because women’s football crowds are so open and welcoming, it’s one of the easiest places to strike up a conversation, whether you’re there with mates, flying solo, or secretly hoping to swap numbers before last orders. It’s social, spontaneous  and far more authentic than awkwardly swiping on your phone in front of the TV.

And let’s be real, times are tough right now. Between rent, bills and the cost of just existing, dating can feel like a luxury. That’s what makes women’s football even better, it’s affordable, exciting and completely genuine. For the price of a couple of drinks, you get 90 minutes of drama, joy and connection. Whether you’re there for love, friendship or just football, it’s proof that the best nights out don’t have to break the bank. Show up, cheer loudly and let the game do the flirting for you.
