Chelsea's Striker Search: Who Should The Blues Sign This Summer?

Chelsea's search for a new striker is becoming one of the most intriguing stories of this summer’s transfer window.

Following Sam Kerr's departure and with Mayra Ramírez continuing to be linked with a move to Real Madrid, the Blues find themselves needing to reshape their attack before the new campaign begins.

Whilst Aggie Beever-Jones remains one of the brightest young forwards in England, and likely to extend her contract at the club, Chelsea are expected to look for another number nine capable of leading the line as Sonia Bompastor prepares to reclaim Women's Super League title.

The club's recruitment strategy in recent years has focused on identifying players who are either entering their prime or possess the potential to become world-class, and there are several forwards across Europe who fit that profile.

However, the Blues have endured a frustrating start to the window, missing out on two of their primary targets.

It had appeared increasingly likely that Bunny Shaw would leave City when her contract expired, with Chelsea reportedly well placed to secure the WSL Golden Boot winner's signature.However, after reopening talks with the reigning champions, Shaw ended the speculation by committing her future to the double-winners.

The Blues also narrowly missed out on one of Europe's brightest young talents, with highly rated forward Felicia Schröder opting to join Real Madrid instead.

Despite those early setbacks, Chelsea remain in a strong position to strengthen their squad this summer, with a host of established stars and exciting young prospects still available.

One name the Blue could turn their attention to is Australian striker Holly McNamara, who recently confirmed her departure from Melbourne City after another outstanding campaign.

Still only 23, McNamara has already established herself as one of Australia's brightest attacking talents, earning regular involvement with the Matildas’ senior squad despite seeing her career disrupted by multiple ACL injuries.

Her numbers speak for themselves with the forward registering 18 goals and six assists in just 25 appearances last season, and improving on the 16 goals she scored in 22 matches the year before. That upward trajectory suggests she is still far from reaching her ceiling.

Inevitably, comparisons have been drawn with Chelsea legend Sam Kerr. Whilst McNamara has her own style, the Australian international has spent time learning alongside Kerr in the Matildas setup and possesses many of the qualities that have made her compatriot one of the world's most feared strikers.

McNamara's game is built around intelligent movement and ruthless finishing; she excels at finding pockets of space between defenders, timing her runs to perfection and attacking crosses or through balls with conviction.

Inside the penalty area she’s an instinctive finisher, equally comfortable striking with either foot and showing composure in one-on-one situations.

McNamara's explosive acceleration allows her to stretch defences and create separation from the markers, whilst her relentless work rate and aggressive pressing make her an ideal fit for teams that defend from the front.

Following Chelsea's disappointing in failing to land Schröder, McNamara represents another exciting young forward with enormous potential.

She fits the profile of a mobile, high-intensity striker capable of developing into one of Europe's top goalscorers, making her a name well worth watching as the transfer window unfolds.

With Chelsea also looking to add a proven experience alongside youthful potential, could Marie-Antoinette Katoto be prized away from OL Lyonnes with a huge bid?

Whilst the French international only joined Lyon last summer, Katoto has found opportunities more limited than expected due to competition from the likes Ada Hegerberg, Vicki Becho and Tabitha Chawinga.

Despite not reaching the goalscoring heights that defined her time at Paris Saint-Germain, Katoto remains one of Europe's most complete centre-forwards.

Her style of play closely resembles the profile Chelsea have admired previously. Katoto shares many of Shaw’s qualities through her intelligent movement, ability to protect possession, excellent awareness inside the penalty area and composure in front of goal.

Like the Jamaican, she consistently occupies dangerous central spaces whilst bringing teammates into attacking moves.

Stylistically, Katoto possesses many of the qualities that made Kerr so successful, combining intelligent movement, perfectly timed runs between defenders and clinical finishing to thrive as a penalty-box striker without relying on sheer physicality.

Surrounded by creative players such as Alyssa Thompson and Lauren James, the French international could quickly become the focal point of Chelsea's attack whilst providing a different option to younger forwards such as McNamara and Beever-Jones.

Throughout her career she has consistently demonstrated the ability to score more than 20 goals in a season, giving Chelsea the reliable goalscorer they arguably lacked during periods of last year.

However, a deal for Katoto would be far from straightforward, with the striker having spent just one season at Lyon, the side are likely to demand a significant transfer fee to part ways with one of their star forwards.

Another player who could emerge as a market opportunity is Elisabeth Terland.

Although there has been no suggestion that Manchester United would even consider strengthening one of their biggest rivals, Terland's contract situation could make her an interesting option should negotiations over an extension fail to progress.

However, recent reports have suggested that the Red Devils could be open to offers for their Norwegian star as she approaches her final year in her contract.

The striker has plenty of league experience through her time with United and of course Brighton before and therefore would require little time to settle into Chelsea's system, arriving as that ready-made striker they require.

United’s number 10 enjoyed an impressive debut season with the club, scoring 10 in the league whilst also producing a memorable UWCL qualifying hat-trick last season.

Terland is a modern penalty-box striker whose greatest strengths lie in her movement and finishing. She constantly drifts into spaces between centre-backs, times her runs perfectly and has an excellent understanding of where crosses and cut-backs are likely to arrive.

Comfortable finishing with either foot and capable in the air despite not being an especially dominant aerial presence, she would provide Chelsea with a dependable goalscorer capable of converting the volume of chances created by Thompson, James and the club's talented group of wide players.

Whilst Terland’s profile fits the club’s recruitment strategy in recent windows, luring her away from her childhood club could be difficult, especially considering Chelsea’s dominance over United since their arrival.

Perhaps the most realistic option available is PSG’s Romée Leuchter.

The Dutch striker has quietly established herself as one of Europe's most clinical forwards and, at 25 years old, fits the Blues’ recruitment model perfectly by combining youth with significant senior experience.

Leuchter is a mobile penalty-box striker whose game revolves around intelligent movement and ruthless finishing. She reads defensive lines exceptionally well, makes perfectly timed runs across defenders and consistently finds space without relying on physical battles. Her ability to score with either foot, finish first time and lead an aggressive press makes her an ideal fit for a possession-dominant Chelsea side.

Her goalscoring record is equally impressive. Leuchter finished as the French league's top scorer last season with 14 goals in just 17 appearances, outperforming every Lyon striker despite PSG finishing behind the reigning Première Ligue champions.

Before moving to France, she enjoyed an extraordinary spell at Ajax where she scored 31 goals in 31 games during her first full season before following that with 21 goals in 25 matches and then an outstanding 34 goals in 33 appearances.

Few strikers in the world can match that level of consistency.

The Dutch international seems like the most ‘gettable’ elite striker in the market, and with PSG missing out on UWCL qualification, Leutcher would surely want to make the switch and show quality on the top stage.

If Chelsea are looking for a unique star, Vanessa Fudalla would offer something entirely different.

The Bayer Leverkusen forward is not a traditional number nine but instead operates as an advanced forward capable of playing as a false nine or alongside another striker.Rather than occupying centre backs physically, Fudalla thrives when drifting into spaces between the lines before making late runs into the penalty area.

Her movement is among her biggest strengths, allowing her to create opportunities for both herself and her teammates, combining intelligent positioning with clinical finishing whilst linking play effectively in the final third.

Last season the young German scored 14 Bundesliga goals in 26 appearances, finishing among the division's leading scorers just behind established names such as Pernille Harder and Selina Cerci.

Earlier in her career she demonstrated her goalscoring instinct by netting 23 goals in 23 matches during RB Leipzig's promotion-winning campaign.

Although Fudalla would represent more of a developmental signing than some of the other options, her versatility and attacking intelligence could make her an exciting addition.

The 24-year-old has the attributes to develop into a world-class forward and would give Bompastor the flexibility to deploy two strikers when chasing games or breaking down stubborn opponents.

Chelsea's recruitment team faces a significant decision over the coming weeks.

Whether the club opts for an experienced international such as Katoto, a proven finisher like Leuchter, an established WSL performer in Terland or an emerging talent such as McNamara or Fudalla, the next striker to arrive at Stamford Bridge could play a defining role in shaping the next era of Bompastor’s attack.
