The new National Women's Soccer League season-opener is right around the corner, and we cannot wait to see another year of fast-paced, unpredictable football.
The opening fixture alone sets the tone for what should be an exciting campaign, as last season’s runners-up, Washington Spirit, host three-time champions Portland Thorns FC on 14th March.
It’s a matchup between two of the league’s biggest names and offers the perfect introduction to a competition that continues to grow in quality and global attention.
One of the most interesting aspects of the NWSL is its unique structure compared with many European leagues.
While competitions such as the WSL, Liga F or the Frauen-Bundesliga rely on a traditional league table to determine the champion, the NWSL uses a playoff system to decide the title.

Each team plays the other 15 clubs twice during the regular season before the top eight advance to a knockout playoff.
This format means that the race for the championship remains open until the very end and often produces dramatic upsets when the playoffs arrive.
Last season demonstrated just how unpredictable the NWSL can be.Â
NJ/NY Gotham FCÂ entered the playoffs as the eighth seed, the lowest position that still qualifies for the postseason.
Despite finishing well behind the regular-season leaders, they went on an impressive run and defeated the Washington Spirit 1–0 in the NWSL Final thanks to a goal from Rose Lavelle.

Their title run also included an impressive victory over the regular-season leaders, the Kansas City Current, who finished the campaign with 29 additional points over Gotham.
It was a reminder that in the NWSL any team can rise to the occasion when the playoffs begin, and on their day, anyone can beat anyone.
The league itself is also expanding. This season the competition grows from 14 to 16 teams with the arrival of Denver Summit FC and Boston Legacy FC.
Expansion reflects the continued rise of women’s football in America and adds fresh rivalries and new fanbases to an already competitive league.

History and pedigree also play an important role in the league’s appeal. Portland Thorns FC remain the most successful club in NWSL history with three championship titles, and they continue to attract some of the best talent in the game.
Across the league there is a strong balance between experienced internationals and emerging young players, creating a competition that feels both established and constantly evolving.
Many fans will already recognise several stars competing in the league.
International stars such as Esme Morgan, Ann-Katrin Berger and Jess Carter bring European experience, whilst some of the biggest names in world football also call the NWSL their home, including Marta, Trinity Rodman, and Barbra Banda.

The highly rated and electrifying talent Sophie Wilson is set to return to the stage this season after maternity leave, determined to help the Thorns reclaim their title.
New arrivals such as Keira Barry and Anouk Denton will add fresh competition across the league, whilst Lindsey Heaps is set to join from OL Lyonnes when her current contract expires.
These additions further strengthen a league that already boasts one of the deepest talent pools in women’s football.

Another appeal of the NWSL is its role as a platform for the sport’s next generation.
Many of the players who have become stars for the US Women’s national team have first made their names in the league, highlighting its importance as a development pathway.
Young talents continue to emerge every season, and the current campaign will be no different. Rising names such as Manaka Matsukubo, who was named Midfielder of the Year in 2025, join promising prospects including Olivia Moultrie, Lilly Reale, and Jaedyn Shaw.
There is even the remarkable emergence of Mak Whitham, who is only 15 years old and already attracting attention as one of the most exciting prospects in the game.

Beyond the players and the competition itself, the NWSL has developed a strong identity and culture.
One unique feature that fans often look forward to each season is the league’s kit releases.
NWSL clubs regularly produce some of the most creative and visually striking shirts in football, with bold colour combinations and designs that reflect the identity of each team and city.
From the small details to unique patterns, every kit tells a different story; the NWSL certainly know how to design a kit.

Accessibility is major factor behind the league’s ever-growing popularity.
Luckily for you, every match this season will be available to watch for free through the NWSL+ app/website, making it easier than ever for new fans to follow the competition and discover their favourite teams and players.
Ultimately, the NWSL stands out because of its intensity and unpredictability.
The matches are typically fast, physical and attacking, and the competitive balance means that no result is ever guaranteed.
As last season showed, even the lowest playoff seed can go on to lift the championship trophy. With expansion, new stars arriving and a wealth of emerging talent ready to shine, the 2026 NWSL season looks set to deliver another year of thrilling football.
