The inaugural Women’s Super League play-off is right around the corner where WSL 2’s Charlton Athletic will host WSL’s Leicester City at The Valley in a high stakes encounter with huge consequences at both ends of the women’s football leagues.
Charlton are aiming to secure a historic promotion to the topflight, whilst Leicester are fighting to avoid relegation after a hugely disappointing campaign in the WSL.
The Foxes head into the play-off under immense pressure following a difficult season that saw them finish bottom of the division on just nine points, ending the campaign eight points adrift of safety.
Their struggles have been particularly evident in the second half of the season, with Rick Passmoor’s side failing to win a match since the turn of the year.
Their last victory came back on 14th December 2025 against London City Lionesses, and since then results and confidence have continued to spiral.

The Midlands side arrive at The Valley on a worrying 12-game losing streak, during which they have conceded 35 goals whilst netting just four times.
Across the entire league season, they have managed just 11 goals in 22 games, the lowest tally in the topflight, having also conceded a league-high of 52 goals.
Leicester picked up just two league wins all season and added two victories in the League Cup, but consistency and attacking quality have been major issues throughout the campaign.
Additionally, clean sheets have been difficult to come by, with the side recording only four in all competitions.
Despite the bleak statistics, Leicester still possess players capable of making an impact in a one-off game.
Hannah Cain could prove to be one of the most dangerous threats for the visitors in the winner-takes-all match.

Although she has only recorded one goal contribution for her club this season, Cain’s international form for Wales tells a different story.
The Welsh international has scored five goals and provided one assist in her last four appearances for her country, showing an ability to rise to the occasion in important moments.
Her pace and pressing ability from wide areas could cause problems for a Charlton side that has looked vulnerable in recent weeks, particularly if Leicester can force turnovers high up the pitch.
Ashleigh Neville is another player Leicester will rely on heavily. Her experience in high-pressure matches could be invaluable in a contest of this magnitude.

Comfortable on either flank in defence, Neville is known for her aggressive style and defensive reliability, averaging 5.3 tackles and 4.8 recoveries per game.
Her ability to win duels and nullify dangerous wide players may be crucial against Charlton’s energetic attack, especially with the threat posed by Amalie Thestrup up top.
The hosts, meanwhile, enter the play-off carrying the disappointment of missing out on automatic promotion on the final day of the season.
A 2-0 defeat to WSL2 champions Birmingham City ended their hopes of going up automatically and marked another setback in what has been a dramatic downturn in form.

For much of the season Charlton appeared destined for promotion, leading the division comfortably before their momentum suddenly collapsed at a crucial stage of the season in March.
Their unbeaten league run came to an unexpected end with a shock 2-0 home defeat to a now-relegated Portsmouth side on 11th March, a result that triggered a concerning slide.
Since that loss Karen Hills’ side have managed only one win in six matches across all competitions, drawing one and losing four. The timing of that dip has raised questions about confidence and composure heading into the biggest match of their season.
Whilst they have struggled for form as of late, Charlton’s defensive record remains one of the strongest arguments in their favour. They conceded just 21 league goals during the campaign, making them the best defensive side in the second tier.
If they can rediscover the resilience and structure that defined the majority of their season, they will believe they have enough quality to secure promotion on home soil.
Lucy Fitzgerald could be one of the players to make the difference for the hosts.

The forward has contributed 11 goal involvements this season and possesses the creativity and unpredictability to trouble Leicester’s fragile defence.
If Fitzgerald can return to the form she showed prior to Charlton’s downturn, she could become the decisive figure in the tie.
Amalie Thestrup will also be central to Charlton’s hopes. Since joining the club, she has recorded eight goal contributions and established herself as a physical and intelligent focal point in attack.
Her strength and ability to battle against defenders could prove especially important against a Leicester side that has struggled defensively throughout the campaign.

With both teams entering the play-off on poor runs of form, the match promises to be tense and unpredictable.
Charlton will hope home advantage and their strong defensive foundations can carry them over the line, whilst Leicester will believe the occasion offers one final opportunity to salvage a disastrous season.
One club will celebrate a place in the Women’s Super League next season, whilst the other will face the heartbreak of missing out.
