To celebrate Black History Month, GIRLACTICO, in partnership with Kick It Out, has spoken to some of the biggest game-changers making an impact across women's football, culture and beyond - both on and off the pitch.

For Volume 10, we sat down with Chloe Sarwie.

Sarwie made her senior debut at just 16, coming on for Chelsea last season in their Champions League game against FC Twente. At 17, she made her WSL debut in December 2025, and in February 2026 she signed her first professional contract with the Blues, running until 2028.

At international level, Sarwie has flown through the ranks. She played for England U23s at 16 and was part of the side that beat Sweden in the U23 European Championship. The left-back has also provided assists for England from set pieces and played at the U20s World Cup in September. With such maturity and experience at a young age, Sarwie looks destined to be a big asset for England’s future.

GIRLACTICO: What does Black History Month mean to you personally and why is it important for you to celebrate it?

Chloe Sarwie: To me, Black History Month is a time to celebrate our culture, history and the people who have paved the way for us. It’s about recognising the achievements of Black people, not just in football but in all areas of life. I think it’s important to celebrate because it reminds us of how far we’ve come and the opportunities we have today because of those before us. It also gives younger generations the chance to learn about their history and be proud of where they come from.

GIRLACTICO: What makes you most proud about being a Black woman? How important is it for Black women to celebrate their identity and feel confident in who they are?

Chloe Sarwie: What makes me most proud about being a Black woman is the strength, resilience and confidence that comes with it. I’m proud of my identity and the women who have come before me and helped create opportunities for girls like myself. I think it’s really important for Black women to celebrate who they are and never feel like they need to change themselves to fit in. Everyone should feel comfortable and confident in their own skin, and I think seeing more Black women succeed in different spaces helps inspire the next generation to believe they can do the same.

GIRLACTICO: What is something you are proud of and what is a dream or goal that you have for the future?

Chloe Sarwie: One thing I’m really proud of is how far I’ve come in my football journey so far. Being able to represent Chelsea and England at my age is something I don’t take for granted. There’s been a lot of hard work and sacrifices along the way, so I’m proud of the progress I’ve made. Looking ahead, my biggest goal is to continue developing as a player, hopefully break into senior football and one day represent England at senior level. I know I’ve still got a long way to go, but I’m excited to see what the future holds.

GIRLACTICO: What does being a role model mean to you, and how do you hope your journey might inspire others?

Chloe Sarwie: For me, being a role model is about setting a good example both on and off the pitch. I think it’s important to show younger girls, especially young Black girls, that they can achieve whatever they put their minds to. Growing up, seeing players who looked like me achieving great things made me believe that I could do it too. If my journey can inspire even one young girl to chase her dreams and believe in herself, then that means a lot to me. I’m still learning and growing myself, but I hope I can show that with hard work, dedication and belief, anything is possible.

GIRLACTICO: Growing up, who inspired you and why, and who inspires you now?

Chloe Sarwie: Growing up, my family have always been my biggest inspiration, especially my mum. She’s always supported me throughout my football journey and made so many sacrifices to help me get to where I am today. Seeing her strength and everything she’s done for me motivates me to keep working hard and make her proud. In football, I’ve always looked up to players who have worked hard to reach the highest level. Even now, I’m inspired by the players around me at Chelsea and England because I’m constantly learning from their experiences, mentality and the standards they set.

GIRLACTICO: What does putting on a Chelsea and England shirt and representing your club/country mean to you?

Chloe Sarwie: Putting on a Chelsea or England shirt is something I’ll never take for granted. It’s a massive honour to represent both my club and my country, especially knowing how many young girls dream of having the same opportunity. Chelsea has played such a big part in my development, both as a player and as a person, so being able to wear the badge means a lot to me. Representing England is also an incredible feeling because you’re not just playing for yourself, you’re representing your country, your family and everyone who’s supported you along the way. Every time I put either shirt on, I want to give my best and make the people who believe in me proud.
