If any English footballer has a spot permanently cemented in the history books, it’s Chloe Kelly. A two-time European champion who scored the winning goal in both finals, a Champions League winner, and an athlete who stands unapologetically in her own power; Kelly is the definition of big-game energy.
Yet sitting down inside Arsenal’s training ground ahead of the season, there is a clear balance between the fearless winner the world sees on the pitch and the grounded person behind the iconic celebrations.
Mindset, Vulnerability, and Balance

To the outside world, Chloe Kelly appears indestructible: a winger who thrives on bravado, viral moments, and high-pressure games. But when asked directly about how she protects her mindset of playing without fear across a demanding season, Kelly offered an answer that felt truthful, proving that even champions don’t feel bulletproof 24/7.
"Being honest. Sometimes that isn't the case," Kelly admits candidly. "In moments where I'm confident, I will show that confidence. In other moments, yeah, I may not look as confident, and I need a little arm around the shoulder - and that's why I've got an amazing manager in Renee (Renée Slegers) to do so."

For Kelly, maintaining high performance isn't about ignoring self-doubt; it’s about knowing what you need to navigate it.
"Knowing yourself and knowing what you need - I've got so many talented players around me to bring that side out in me or lift me up when I need to. But I try to just be myself at all times, whether that's confident me or just chilled, and finding the balance between football and lifestyle. When my door closes and I'm just relaxed, I find a lot of happiness in that. Finding that balance is really important so that I can perform on the pitch."

The Road Back to Joy
That emphasis on peace and balance isn't accidental, it was a hard fought win. To understand Kelly’s mindset today, it’s important to take a look back through her career.
Her journey has been defined as much by resilience as by silverware. From enduring the devastating and agonising grind of an ACL recovery to navigating a tumultuous departure from Manchester City - a period layered with severe anxiety, panic attacks, and even the early signs of alopecia - Kelly has stood in the darkest corners of professional sport.

Looking back 18 months, when she stepped back through Arsenal's doors on loan with "a bit of fear of the unknown," her transformation into a Champions League champion and back-to-back European champion feels almost poetic.
The physical toll of last season's stop-start campaign only sharpened her focus ahead of this campaign. Refreshed after a summer without a major international tournament, Kelly spent her off-season sharpening every technical detail. Working closely with her longtime personal coach Dan - who she has known since her teenage work experience days at QPR - she prioritised heavy gym work alongside 1-on-1 ball drills to ensure her body is primed for full-season availability.
Season Ambitions: Arsenal First, World Stage Later
England and Arsenal fans, watch out, because Chloe’s targets for the upcoming campaign are crystal clear: total consistency and tangible output. For Kelly, that means delivering where it counts most, in and around the penalty area. "In and around the box in high areas, I know that's something I need to bring to the team in terms of my goals and assists," she comments. "Ultimately, goals win games."
And while a World Cup sits on everyone’s minds, Kelly refuses to get caught up looking too far down the line, keeping her sights firmly set on the work right in front of her. "If I look at where I was before the Euros, I'd never have been there if I got ahead of myself," she explains. "Right now, I need to focus on what I can do for Arsenal."
That loyalty to Arsenal runs deep. During the interview, Kelly was reminded that it was 11 years to the day since she made her senior debut for the club against Watford as a teenager, and, in much CK style, scored.

"I remember stepping out on that pitch," Kelly reflected with a smile. "It feels like not too long ago now. I was buzzing to be at Arsenal, and I still get that same feeling today. Time flies by, but the feeling of playing for Arsenal never changes."
Having come through Arsenal’s academy herself, supporting the club's next wave of talent comes just as naturally. "Jessie Gale, what she did last season was incredible," Chloe says. "Trying to guide her and help her as much as we can as a group is so exciting. But for her, just being herself is really important too because she’s a bubbly character and a great person to be around."
She's equally invested in seeing academy graduates Katie Reid and Michelle Agyemang return to the pitch after long ACL injury lay-offs: "Seeing two young players coming up through Arsenal Youth come back from big injuries to make a massive impact... that excites me just as much as playing myself."
Setting The Standard

Beyond trophies and output, Kelly’s ultimate drive comes down to impact. As the women's game grows exponentially with sellout crowds at the Emirates and demands on players being higher than ever, Kelly is aware of the eyes watching her every move.
"For me, trying to look at those younger generations of girls and inspire them every time I step on the pitch is what matters," Kelly says. "I want to show those girls that it's possible to enjoy yourself and have a smile on your face, as well as competing at the highest level. That’s what I try to do."
Whether she is battling back from career-threatening injuries, stepping up under the bright lights of a European final, or finding peace behind closed doors, Chloe Kelly continues to prove that real strength isn't about being untouchable, but instead, about being vulnerable, backing yourself through the storm, and never losing the joy that made you fall in love with the game in the first place.
