Every Position Each WSL Team Needs This Summer

The Women's Super League transfer window is shaping up to be one of the most exciting in recent memory.

From iconic club legends moving on, to some of the biggest names in world football being linked with blockbuster moves, WSL clubs are wasting no time in strengthening their squads.

With every side looking to close the gap on reigning champions Manchester City, the race for next season's title is set to heat up.

Arsenal

The Gunners enter the summer in a period of transition, with important decisions to make and several areas to strengthen if they are to seriously challenge City for the WSL title.

The most obvious need comes at left back following Katie McCabe's departure. Few players in the league offer the same combination of leadership, aggression and attacking quality as the Republic of Ireland Captain.

Arsenal reportedly agreed a pre-contract deal with former Barcelona star Ona Batlle back in January with the Spaniard’s ability to play on either side of the defence giving Renée Slegers additional flexibility.

Another priority is defensive midfield. Ever since Lia Wälti left the club last summer, the Gunners failed to add an additional natural ball-winning midfielder capable of protecting the defence and therefore provided little depth to help out Kim Little.

The midfield often looked vulnerable in transition last season, particularly against Europe's strongest sides. Georgia Stanway has been heavily linked with a move to North London and would bring exactly the kind of physicality, leadership and defensive awareness Arsenal have been missing.

Further forward, replacing Beth Mead's creativity will be crucial. Whilst Slegers’ side possess plenty of attacking threat through the middle, Mead's ability to create chances, stretch defences and influence big matches cannot easily be replicated.

Germany’s forward and Arsenal fan Selina Cerci has emerged as a reported target and would add versatility across the frontline, whilst free agent Geraldine Reuteler's ability to operate in both midfield and attack would also provide valuable depth.

There is also a case for signing another centre-back. Laia Codina's departure and Leah Williamson's ongoing injury concerns mean the side could find themselves short of options if they are to compete across all competitions next season.

Aston Villa

Few clubs have more work to do this summer than Aston Villa. After a disappointing campaign that saw them struggle for consistency at both ends of the pitch, Villa enter the transfer window needing improvements across almost every department.

Goalkeeper has become an immediate priority. With Sabrina D'Angelo’s departure, coupled with Ellie Roebuck's shoulder injury, it has left Natalia Arroyo’s side vulnerable between the posts.

The club should target an experienced goalkeeper to compete with Roebuck and is capable of bringing stability and confidence to a defence that often looked fragile last season.

A player such as Janina Leitzig could be a smart acquisition, offering a steady presence and the top-flight experience that can be invaluable for a side looking to establish itself in the division.

Former Real Madrid goalkeeper Misa Rodríguez would also fit the profile perfectly and, if the club are looking to make a real statement, signing the Spaniard would represent a major coup.

The attacking unit may require an even bigger rebuild as Kirsty Hanson has signed for Spurs following her best-ever goalscoring campaign, whilst Gabi Nunes and Ebony Salmon have also departed. Losing that level of attacking output would create a major challenge for Arroyo and her recruitment team.

Defensively, Villa conceded too many goals and frequently looked vulnerable against direct opposition. Additional experience at centre-back would provide leadership and organisation to a back line that lacked consistency throughout the campaign.

Ultimately, the side’s summer is less about filling one specific position and more about rebuilding a squad capable of competing comfortably in mid-table rather than looking over its shoulder at the relegation battle.

Birmingham City

Birmingham City's return to the WSL has been built on determination and resilience, but surviving in the division will require significant investment.

Goalkeeper is perhaps their most urgent need. Multiple departures have left Amy Merrick’s side short of options between the posts, and recruiting an experienced keeper should be near the top of the club's priority list.

A player familiar with the demands of the WSL would provide immediate reassurance and could look at the likes of free agent D’Angelo for that security.

Midfield is another concern following Lucy Quinn's departure. Birmingham will spend long periods without possession against many opponents and therefore need a disciplined defensive midfielder capable of controlling play and protecting the back four.

Additional centre-backs are equally important as the physical and technical demands of facing elite forwards every week represent a major step up from the second tier so Merrick’s side will require greater depth to cope.

In attack, the squad possesses exciting talent and pace but lacks significant top-flight experience. Bringing in an experienced forward who understands the challenges of the WSL could prove invaluable during difficult moments throughout the season.

Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton's journey to their first-ever FA Cup final represented another major step forward under Dario Vidošić, but the Seagulls cannot afford to stand still.

Despite producing some of the most entertaining moments in the division, Brighton often struggled to convert promising performances into victories because of a lack of ruthlessness in front of goal.

A clinical striker therefore remains the club's biggest priority. Losing Michelle Agyemang early in the season disrupted their attacking plans and highlighted the need for greater depth in the position.

Wide areas also require reinforcement as Rosa Kafaji returns to Arsenal following her loan spell which removes an important creative option.

Vidošić’s side would benefit from another winger capable of complementing Kiko Seike's pace and direct running on the opposite flank, feeding balls into a top class striker.

Creative midfield is another area worth monitoring with uncertainty surrounding Fran Kirby’s future following Juventus’ interest in recent windows.

Kirby remains one of the league's most gifted players, but injuries have limited her influence at times; bringing in a younger creative midfielder would provide both competition and a long-term succession planning.

Charlton Athletic

Charlton Athletic's promotion is one of the stories of the year, but the challenge now shifts from reaching the WSL, to remaining there.

Karen Hills’ side have already seen several important players depart this summer, meaning recruitment will be focused on rebuilding the spine of the squad. Experience will be vital, particularly given the huge jump in quality between the second division and top tier.

Defensively, the play-off winners need players capable of handling the relentless pressure applied by top-flight attacks; an experienced centre-back should therefore be a major target.

Midfield is another area requiring investment. Charlton will need players who can dictate possession when opportunities arise whilst also possessing the defensive discipline needed to compete against stronger opponents.

Alongside recruitment, Hills' side also have key contract matters to address. Discussions are ongoing with youngster Lucy Fitzgerald and experienced defender Elisha N'Dow, two players the manager will surely be eager to retain.

The departure of Amelie Thestrup leaves a sizeable hole in attack and finding a replacement should be one of the club's main objectives. A forward with proven experience at WSL level could be the difference between survival and an immediate return to the WSL 2.

For Charlton, more than perhaps any other club, recruitment this summer will define the trajectory of their season.

Chelsea

Chelsea, much like Arsenal, have significant work to do this summer after a disappointing campaign. Despite lifting one trophy, the season will ultimately be viewed as below expectations given the club's ambition and recent success.

The Blues have already addressed one area by bringing in Katie McCabe, a move that should help solve the problems caused by Niamh Charles' injury struggles and expected departure.

However, the biggest challenge facing Sonia Bompastor is replacing the goals and influence lost through Sam Kerr's exit.

Chelsea's attack could undergo significant change this summer as reports link Mayra Ramirez with a move to Real Madrid and uncertainty has surrounded Aggie Beever-Jones' future in recent weeks.

Bompastor’s side may need multiple additions rather than a single replacement. Finding a striker capable of leading the line for Chelsea is arguably the most important recruitment task of the entire window.

One name that fits their recruitment model is Romee Leuchter. The Dutch forward enjoyed a remarkable season in France and combines elite goalscoring numbers with valuable experience despite still being relatively young.

The Blues have also been linked with Swedish young baller Felicia Schröder, although reportedly the striker prefers another year of development before making a major move.

Defensively, a centre back should not be overlooked. Millie Bright's retirement leaves a huge void, whilst Nathalie Björn's injury problems have highlighted the need for additional depth to support Veerle Buurman and Kadeisha Buchanan.

Chelsea still possess quality options, but another top level defender would help ensure they remain competitive both domestically and in Europe.

Whilst Bompastor’s side have quality in the middle of the park, they have been linked to PSG’s Jennifer Echegini, who they attempted to lure in the winter window.

Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace's immediate return to the WSL presents an opportunity to prove they have learned from the mistakes that led to relegation.

The Eagles struggled badly in both penalty areas during their previous topflight campaign as goals were difficult to come by, making the recruitment of an experienced striker one of the club's most important priorities.

Whilst Abbie Larkin provides excitement and potential in front of goal, Palace need a proven goalscorer capable of converting the limited opportunities newly promoted teams often receive.

Defensively, the club conceded far too many goals during their relegation season. Additional experience and leadership at the back will be crucial if Palace are to become more competitive against the division's strongest attacks.

The midfield also requires attention; a holding midfielder with extensive WSL experience would provide balance, leadership and composure while helping protect the defence.

For a club focused on survival, strengthening the spine of the team must be the primary objective.

Everton

The biggest concern for the Toffees this summer surrounds Kelly Gago. Interest from PSG in the winter transfer window saw the striker express her desire to leave but after the French side refused to pay a great enough fee, Gago was reintegrated.

However, it appears increasingly likely that the forward could leave Merseyside this summer. If that does happen, Everton will lose one of their most dangerous attacking players and would need to recruit a proven goalscorer capable of leading the line.

Creativity has also been another recurring issue as the side scored just 25 league goals last season, one of the lowest totals in the division, highlighting the need for a midfielder capable of consistently creating opportunities and unlocking stubborn defences.

The future of the defence could also shape recruitment plans. Ruby Mace and Martina Fernández both impressed last season and have naturally attracted interest from big clubs.

Barcelona reportedly retain a strong interest in bringing Fernández back after just two seasons away, meaning Everton may need contingency plans in place.

Adding another winger would also provide valuable depth. Someone capable of beating defenders, stretching play and operating across multiple attacking positions could give Everton a new dimension in the final third.

Liverpool

Liverpool's impressive improvement under Gareth Taylor means expectations are beginning to rise, but several important issues need resolving before the new season begins.

The first concerns the goalkeeper spot as Jennifer Falk became a key figure following her arrival in January, helping transform Liverpool's defensive record during the second half of the season.

However, with BK Häcken unwilling to sanction a permanent transfer, the Reds need to find another goalkeeper capable of delivering a similar level of reliability.

The defence also requires significant attention. Gemma Evans, who’s set to join Newcastle, and long-serving captain Gemma Bonner, who has retired, leave a sizeable leadership void so replacing that experience and organisation will be one of Taylor’s biggest challenges this summer.

Further forward, Beata Olsson enjoyed a breakthrough campaign and established herself as a genuine attacking threat. However, Liverpool still need another striker to compete alongside her, particularly after Martha Thomas returned to her parent club.

Adding an experienced goalscorer could help Liverpool close the gap on the clubs pushing for European qualification and get back to the standard they once were at.

London City Lionesses

No club in the WSL enters the summer with greater ambition than London City Lionesses.

Backed by Michele Kang's ownership and significant investment, the newly promoted side are not simply aiming to survive in the topflight. Instead, they appear determined to establish themselves as genuine contenders in the years ahead.

The club's recruitment strategy already reflects those ambitions. Having previously attracted high-profile names and consistently been linked with some of the biggest players in world football, London City are expected to be one of the busiest clubs during the transfer window.

Midfield could be transformed should their reported interest in Alexia Putellas materialise. Few players in the women's game possess the Spaniard's technical ability, creativity and leadership, and her arrival would instantly elevate the club's status.

With Wassa Sangaré returning to OL Lyonnes following the expiration of her loan spell, depth at the back has become increasingly important.

Rumours linking the club with Mapi León demonstrate the calibre of player they are targeting and underline their determination to build a squad capable of competing immediately.

Goalkeeper is another position that is reportedly set to be strengthened despite Elene Lete’s recent contract extension.

Mary Earps has been heavily linked with a return to England following her departure from PSG and would provide not only world-class shot-stopping ability but invaluable experience and leadership.

Perhaps the biggest need remains in attack. Despite possessing capable forwards in Isobel Goodwin and Nikita Parris, London City occasionally struggled to convert possession and chances into goals last season.

A clinical striker capable of consistently delivering 10 to 15 goals a season would transform their prospects and help bridge the gap to the league's established elite.

Manchester City

Manchester City have already made headlines by signing Beth Mead, but their transfer business is unlikely to stop there.

The departure of Leila Ouahabi has left a vacancy at left back, and reports suggest Niamh Charles is expected to arrive from Chelsea. Whilst that move would solve one problem, there are still concerns elsewhere in the squad.

Extending Bunny Shaw's contract was City's biggest victory of the summer after reports suggested the golden boot winner was on the verge of joining rivals Chelsea.

The Jamaican striker remains one of the most devastating forwards in world football and is central to everything City do in attack.

However, the club's reliance on Shaw was exposed whenever she missed matches in previous seasons. With Champions League football returning, City need another striker capable of contributing goals regularly and reducing the burden on their star forward.

The midfield appears well-stocked following the arrival of Sam Coffey in January, and Andree Jeglertz will hope Sydney Lohmann and Grace Clinton can finally enjoy injury-free campaigns after frustrating first seasons at the club.

Perhaps the most underrated area requiring attention is right-back. Kerstin Casparij was outstanding throughout much of last season but appeared physically exhausted towards the end of the campaign after carrying an enormous workload.

With Laura Wienroither featuring for just 10 league minutes, and Naomi Layzell struggling for minutes following injury, City could benefit from another reliable option on the right side of defence.

Manchester United

Manchester United have seemingly fallen away from the top three this season and struggled to gain real momentum and consistent results despite recruiting top talent in the previous two transfer windows.

Squad depth remains their biggest obstacle to be able to compete consistently with Arsenal, Chelsea, and City and risk falling even further behind with Spurs and LCL showing real ambition.

Midfield is arguably the most pressing concern. United struggled when Hinata Miyazawa was on international duty and lacked the depth required to combat injuries and fixture congestion. Another technically gifted midfielder would provide much-needed balance should Miyazawa become unavailable.

Wide areas are also a huge priority after the Red Devils struggled for consistency. Celin Bizet Donnum's maternity leave left United without a natural right winger for last season, forcing players such as Jess Park to operate out of position after the club failed to acquire additional depth.

On the opposite flank, Leah Galton's departure has created another vacancy that needs addressing to alleviate the load on Melvine Malard.

At centre back, Maya Le Tissier's consistency has been remarkable, but no player can continue playing every minute indefinitely. Adding another high-quality defender would not only reduce the burden on the captain but also strengthen one of the league's most organised back lines.

It looks as though the side have already increased their depth in the fullback spot after reportedly recruiting Spanish youngster Andrea Medina, who left Atletico Madrid at the end of the summer.

Should the club choose to cash in on Elisabeth Terland as reports suggest, a striker should quickly move to the top of United's shopping list. Lea Schüller has yet to fully settle in England, meaning Marc Skinner’s side cannot afford to lose one of their most reliable goalscorers without bringing in suitable cover.

Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham have already moved decisively in the market, signalling their intent to continue building under Martin Ho.

The recruitment of Shekiera Martinez from West Ham represents a long-term investment in the future of their attack and provides a successor to Bethany England.

The addition of Caitlin Dijkstra from Wolfsburg also strengthens a defence that has occasionally lacked consistency against the league's strongest opponents.

However, despite those early moves, Spurs still have a few areas that require attention if they are to challenge the traditional top four.

Midfield depth could be an area in which the side would want to add depth too. Spurs have improved considerably in possession over the past two seasons, but they still lack the variety of options available to the clubs above them.

A player such as Victoria Pelova, who has reportedly attracted interest following her Arsenal departure, would bring technical quality and tactical flexibility.

Another area is out wide following Maika Hamano's return to Chelsea which leaves a creative void and removes an important source of attacking unpredictability.

Having enjoyed the most productive season of her career, Kirsty Hanson offers exactly that. Her pace, directness, and finishing ability aligns closely with the approach Ho aims to establish. Of course, the side still have Jess Naz to eventually welcome back after the winger recovers from her ACL injury.

Right back also remains a slight concern for Ho’s side as Ella Morris continues her recovery from an ACL injury and Charli Grant's departure leaves the squad short of natural options.

Additional depth will be crucial if Spurs are to cope with injuries and maintain consistency throughout a long season.

West Ham United

West Ham have already addressed one key area by recruiting experienced goalkeeper Constance Picaud, but there remains considerable work to do elsewhere if they want to avoid a relegation battle.

The defence has been weakened significantly following Estelle Cascarino's loan spell ending, whilst Tuva Hansen faces a lengthy recovery from an ACL injury.

Those developments leave West Ham short of both quality and quantity at the back, making defensive recruitment one of the club's most pressing priorities.

The departure of Martinez to Spurs is another major blow. Martinez provided pace, power and goals throughout the campaign, and replacing her contribution will not be easy.

Bringing in another striker to partner Riko Ueki has become essential if West Ham are to avoid another season battling near the bottom of the table.

Midfield is another area where improvements could make a substantial difference if they want to take the side to the next level and compete in the likes of the FA Cup and newly formatted League Cup.

A creative playmaker capable of contributing goals and assists would help alleviate pressure on the attack and give the Hammers greater control against stronger opposition.
